Brussels sprouts

I got home late from work tonight and had nothing planned for dinner. Then I remembered that I actually need to cook some of the food we have before Easter dinners start rolling in so I had to cook tonight. I had two foods that I've never actually cooked before but now is as good a time as any, right? Well the first was the parsnips which I sliced thin and roasted with sweet potato. I wish I had sliced the parsnips a little thinner since they didn't cook quite as quickly as the sweet potatoes. Ah well, next time.

Mike helped me toss together a quick salad with some red pepper and strawberries. I love the bright red on the greens. Until recently, I never thought much about salads. I always thought the greens to be bland. Then we started buying greens other than romaine: baby spinach and arugula. The arugula has a really nice bitter, almost peppery taste.

And then, the second mystery ingredient to me: Brussels sprouts. I'd never even tried them until tonight. Mike is the one who suggested them so I asked him how he wanted them. The answer? With bacon. Well OK then.. So I pan fried a couple slices of bacon then took them out of the pan and set them aside. I halved the sprouts and put them flat side down in the bacon fat and let them cook until tender and brown, flipping them to let the round side brown, too. I tossed the bacon back in then sprinkled them with Romano cheese. Well, I must admit that I am sold on Brussels sprouts now. Yep, they were delicious! mmm

OK 5 minutes to Idol...time to clean up!
